The Role

Salary : Up to £78.5K per annum

Location: Nottinghamshire

Are you ready to lead a service that makes a real impact on communities, the environment, and the future of waste management?

As Head of Waste Management, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering an efficient, sustainable, and commercially driven waste service across Nottinghamshire. This is a unique opportunity to lead in the space of local government reform and deeper devolution, driving forward collaboration across councils to improve waste collection, recycling, and disposal at a regional level.

With an annual budget of over £40 million and oversight of a 26-year, £850 million+ PFI waste contract, this role is not just about service delivery - it’s about strategy, innovation, and leadership. You will be at the forefront of negotiating and managing complex waste contracts, ensuring best value for the council while enhancing environmental outcomes.

Waste management is evolving rapidly with legislative changes, including Simpler Recycling and the opportunities presented by the East Midlands Mayoral Combined Authority through Devolution, and those presented by upcoming Local Government reorganisation. You will be the key figure leading Nottinghamshire’s response, influencing policy, and ensuring that the county remains at the cutting edge of sustainable waste solutions.

You will lead and manage waste services across the county, ensuring efficiency and sustainability while optimising contracts, maximising revenue opportunities, and delivering cost-effective solutions. Building strong partnerships with borough and district councils, you will drive a seamless waste collection and disposal service, ensuring Nottinghamshire meets national and regional recycling and landfill diversion targets. Your leadership will be instrumental in shaping strategic initiatives, representing the council at the highest levels, and influencing national waste policy to secure funding for innovative waste initiatives.

We are seeking a dynamic leader with significant experience in waste management, contract negotiation, and commercial service delivery. You will demonstrate ability to thrive in complex environments, have a track record of driving efficiency, and are passionate about sustainability and local government reform.

If you’re ready to take on a career-defining role that combines strategic leadership with real-world impact, we want to hear from you.
